The IPHA 76th Annual Meeting will feature 4 tracks with 12 Concurrent Sessions, 7 Pre-conference Workshops, 11 Skills Building Sessions, 2 Plenary Sessions, the annual IPHA Business Meeting, IPHA Section Meetings, the Friends of Public Health Dinner, a premiere exhibit hall, and poster presentations.

Conference Tracks:

T1: Behavioral Health: Sessions will focus on relevant and emerging topics in the behavioral health field. Examples include topics such as community awareness and support of behavioral health, mental illness and substance abuse prevention, stigma, resilience, understanding addiction and identifying solutions, exploring effective partnerships, and the role of public health.

T2: Health Equity: Sessions will focus on a variety of community-based programs, collaborations and initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of health and illness ― social, economic and environmental factors.  Examples include highlighting best practices and research, educational models, innovative approaches, and social determinants of health to enhance effectively reaching underserved populations and promote reduction of health disparities.  

T3: Communications and Health Advocacy: Sessions will provide discussion on emerging trends and best practices related to health communication tools and technologies, beyond crisis communication, and focusing on health promotion and advocacy efforts.  Examples include creating a better understanding of public health, marketing the return on investment of public health via the use of storytelling, and social marketing campaigns targeted at changing perceptions, behaviors or policies about health.

T4: Partnerships and Collaboration: Sessions will demonstrate activities, strategies and proven practices to assist in building strong partnerships, engaging communities, and acknowledging collective impact.  Examples include case studies on collaborations to promote capacity building, policy change or program design to address a public health issue and discussions exploring the development and outcomes of partnerships with community based organizations and nontraditional partners.

The Awards Committee for the 76th Annual Meeting is requesting nominations for this year’s awards. All nominations must be submitted online by 5:00pm, August 21, 2017.  The awards will be presented during the Annual Meeting at the Friends of Public Health Dinner to be held September 20, 2017, 5:30pm - 8:00pm.  You are not limited in the number of nominations you submit. Awards are available in the following categories:

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Illinois Public Health Association announces the availability of four (4) scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year for qualified graduate students in Public Health.

IPHA Scholarship for Graduate Study in Public Health: Three scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each

Edith Heide Memorial Scholarship:  One scholarship in the amount of $2,000

Eligibility:  Must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Illinois and enrolled in a public-health related graduate degree program at a recognized and accredited university in Illinois.

Guidelines:  Scholarship assistance may be used toward the payment of tuition and fees only.  Recipients of scholarships may apply and be considered for support for a second year.

Award:  The applicant with the highest score will receive the Edith Heide scholarship and the second - fourth place applicants will all receive the IPHA Scholarship for Graduate Study in Public Health.  The four scholarship recipients will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at the IPHA Annual Meeting, September 20, 2017, 5:30pm – 8:00pm, to receive their scholarship certificate. If the scholarship recipient is not a current IPHA member, they will be given a one-year student membership.         

Disbursement:  Upon verification of enrollment, the Illinois Public Health Association will send the scholarship funds directly to the financial aid office of the recipient’s college or university.

Deadline:   Completed applications for scholarship assistance for the 2017-18 academic year must be received no later than 5:00pm on August 4, 2017.
