Dear Friend of Public Health,
Join us in telling Congress to oppose any effort to repeal or weaken the Affordable Care Act.
Last week the Senate introduced a budget resolution that takes the first step toward repealing the landmark health law. The Senate is expected to have a series of votes on amendments this week, followed by a final vote late in the week. The measure is expected to pass the House shortly thereafter. This is just the beginning of the repeal process. We need all APHA advocates to weigh in today so Congress hears our opposition loud and clear!
Repealing the ACA without ensuring a viable replacement plan would result in the loss of services that save lives and improve health. Nearly 30 million Americans would lose their health insurance, leading to an increase in health disparities and premature deaths. The first and only mandatory funding stream for public health and prevention created under the ACA, the Prevention and Public Health Fund, would also be at risk and result in a major loss of support for public health programs.
I also urge you to join other advocates for a national call-in day in support of the ACA on Jan. 10. Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and the operator will connect you directly with the office of your request. APHA has developed talking points that you can use to express your support for the ACA and oppose the repeal effort.
By speaking out together, members of Congress will see the strong and active constituency opposed to repealing the ACA without a workable replacement plan. Thanks for joining us in this effort!
