Job Description

Are you looking for a rewarding career that touches lives every day? If so, consider a position as a Justice Victim Advocate in the Equity and Engagement Department at the City of Champaign.
Responsibilities of Position
Justice Victim Advocates are civilians who coordinate services on behalf of victims of violent crimes. They provide services through a process designed to ensure justice, coping and healing for victims and their families. They successfully help navigate individuals and families through the criminal justice system beginning with initial law enforcement contact. JVA’s use empathy, crisis intervention, trauma informed care and culturally responsive techniques to deliver quality and intensive supportive services. They coordinate with social service providers and serve as a liaison between agencies, law enforcement and other providers. The JVA’s require the ability to be flexible as a regular schedule consists of emergency call outs at all hours.
The annual starting salary range is $70,705 - $80,491, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, April 28, 2024.

Required Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, psychology, criminal justice, or a related field.
• Experience in victim assistance or advocacy, victim rights, counseling, criminal justice, or related employment experience.
• An equivalent combination of work experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and victim rights.
• Knowledge of counseling principles and techniques, and/or services and resources.
• Current valid state-issued driver’s license and good driving record.
• Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Availability to occasionally work outside of regular work hours including evenings and weekends and on-call availability on a rotational basis, as needed, to provide 24/7 crisis response to crime scenes, victims’ homes, hospitals, and other locations that may include hostile or unknown circumstances.
• Ability to perform the duties of the job including working in crowds and walking or moving around for long periods of time, with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in victim services providing direct support to individuals affected by trauma.
• Experience with non-traditional work hours, on-call responsibilities, or hotline management.
• Knowledge of or experience in trauma-informed responses.
Drug screening, driving abstract, and criminal background check/investigation will be required.
