Take Action: Protect SNAP Funding in the Farm Bill

Last week, the Senate Agriculture Committee released its draft Farm Bill, which is expected to be considered soon. Like the House-passed version, the proposal does not restore the approximately $187 billion in SNAP funding reductions enacted last year. These reductions could increase food insecurity, threatening the ability of the 41 million Americans who rely on SNAP to consistently put healthy food on the table.

The Illinois Public Health Association recognizes that food security is a cornerstone of public health. SNAP helps families access nutritious food, supports children's development, and reduces the health impacts of food insecurity.

Our national partner, the American Public Health Association (APHA), has launched an action alert encouraging advocates to urge Congress to protect SNAP funding during Farm Bill negotiations.

Time is short. Please act today:

  • Send a message to your U.S. Senators through APHA's action alert.
  • Attend a congressional town hall during the August recess and ask your elected officials about protecting nutrition assistance.
  • Share the action alert with your colleagues and networks.

Thank you for continuing to advocate for policies that improve the health of all Illinois residents.
