Declaration of Public Health Emergency to Address National Opioid Crisis

On October 26, Acting Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Eric D. Hargan declared a nationwide public health emergency regarding the opioid crisis.

Later in the day, the U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams released a statement regarding the declaration of a nationwide public health emergency, which included the announcement of the formation of a Pain Management Best Practices Task Force.

Elinore F. McCance-Katz, the first Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, also released a statement on the actions underway by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) underscoring the urgency of the issue.
